Things to do in Foum Zguid: the locals' guide

By the Desert Foum Zguid team · Updated 11 August 2026

Foum Zguid is not a museum town: it is a living Saharan market town whose charm hides in the palm grove, at the souk, and on the tracks running due south. Here are the 8 experiences worth the journey — from a free evening walk to a night in the dunes — ranked by the people who do them all year.

Shaded lane in the Foum Zguid palm grove

1. Get lost in the palm grove

Kilometres of gardens under the date palms, watered by a lattice of irrigation channels: alfalfa, henna, pomegranate trees. Enter by any lane of the old village in late afternoon and follow the water. Free, two hours, unforgettable in low light.

2. The weekly souk

The trading day of the Bani's nomads and villages: dates, spices, livestock, blacksmiths. The day varies with the seasons — ask us before you come. Arrive early (7–11 am); it is the most authentic moment of the week.

3. Sunset tea facing Jbel Bani

The black mountain barring the northern horizon catches fire at dusk. The viewpoint above the village is a 20-minute walk; the main-street cafés offer the lazy version.

4. The Tissint waterfalls

45 minutes towards Tata, the Tissint river drops down a staircase of ledges in an ochre canyon — swimming possible much of the year, guaranteed spectacle after rain. Ordinary road, half a day.

5. The Jbel Bani rock carvings

Antelopes, cattle and hunters engraved millennia ago, when the Sahara was savanna. The sites are visited by 4x4 with a guide — alone you will not find them, which is just as well for their preservation. Often combined with Lake Iriqui.

6. A day at Lake Iriqui

The ancient Saharan lake of Iriqui National Park: a clay plain to the horizon, the Moroccan Colorado, fossils, and a nomad lunch under an acacia. Our day trip leaves the village at 9 am (from €80).

7. A camp night at Erg Chigaga

The reason Foum Zguid exists on travellers' maps: the high dunes are 2.5 h down the track, the 2-day / 1-night tour departs daily in season (from €140), and Chigaga's sky has no equal in Morocco.

8. The cooperatives' crafts

Weaving, palm basketry and jewellery: the craft centre shows the work of the district's women's cooperatives. Prices are fixed and fair — the most useful purchase you will make in the village.

Putting it together

Everything above combines into 2–3 days: arrival and palm grove the first evening, Lake Iriqui or Tissint the next day, departure for the camp the day after. For the road from Marrakech, Ouarzazate or Agadir, see our practical Foum Zguid guide — or our all-inclusive trips.

Frequently asked questions

How many days should I plan for Foum Zguid?

One night covers the village itself; two nights add Tissint or a Lake Iriqui day; three days open up the camp night at Erg Chigaga — the real reason to come this far.

Is Foum Zguid worth visiting in summer?

Yes, differently: palm grove at first light, a swim at the Tissint waterfalls, siesta through the hot hours and mild evenings on the café terraces. The desert itself is then limited to sunrise departures.

Can everything be done without a 4x4?

The village, palm grove, souk and the Jbel Bani viewpoint, yes — on foot or by bike. Tissint is reachable by ordinary car on tarmac. Lake Iriqui and Erg Chigaga, however, require a 4x4 with a guide.
