Our camp
The Erg Chigaga desert camp
A circle of woven wool tents at the foot of Chigaga's highest dunes, 60 kilometres from the nearest light bulb. Every one of our tracks ends here — and the desert night begins.
A real overnight in the Moroccan desert
Call it desert camping, and you would be right — though it is camping the Saharan way. The camp is neither a hotel nor a fixed compound: the tents are raised nomad-style in woven wool, with real beds, thick blankets and carpets underfoot. Dinner is cooked over the fire — tajine, sand-baked bread, mint tea — while the sun drops behind the ridges. After that there is only the fire, the music, and a sky like none you have seen: Erg Chigaga is one of the darkest places in Morocco, free of any light pollution.
Two comfort levels
| Option | Tent | Bathroom | Guide price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic camp | Nomad tent, real beds | Shared | from €70 / person half board |
| Luxury camp | Large private tent, hotel bedding | Private ensuite | from €150 / person half board |
Most guests book the camp as part of a 2-day / 1-night tour from Foum Zguid (4x4 transport and camels included) — the simplest and best-value option. The night can also be booked on its own if you arrive by 4x4.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cold at night?
From December to February, yes: nights can drop to around 5 °C. Tents have thick blankets and we provide warm sleeping bags — just bring a hat and a fleece. The rest of the season, nights are mild.
Is there electricity or phone signal?
The camp is lit by lanterns and solar; phones can be charged in the 4x4. A faint signal reaches some ridge tops — but that absence is rather the point.
Can we come with our own 4x4?
Yes. Self-drivers and overlanders can book the night alone and reach us in their own vehicle — we send the GPS point and track advice, or a lead guide from Foum Zguid if you prefer an escort.
