How many days do you need for the Moroccan desert?
By the Desert Foum Zguid team · Updated 14 August 2026
Short answer: two days minimum to sleep in the dunes if you start from a desert gateway like Foum Zguid, three days minimum from Marrakech, four days for the desert to stop being a stopover and become the trip. Below that you see scenery; from the first night onwards, you understand why people come back.
The rule that simplifies everything
The desert is counted in nights, not days. A "3-day tour" from Marrakech contains only one night in the dunes — the rest is road. So the right question is not "how many days do I have?" but "how many Saharan nights am I buying?". The whole table below follows from that arithmetic.
Length by length, what you actually get
| Length | Nights in the dunes | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day (from Foum Zguid) | 0 | You see the desert. Honest, as long as you know you are only seeing it. |
| 2 days (from Foum Zguid) | 1 | The minimum that counts: sunset, night, sunrise. Our best-selling format, for good reasons. |
| 3 days (from Marrakech) | 1 | The first reasonable format from the city — two days would be road-trip cruelty. |
| 4 days | 2-3 | The tipping point: a whole day without a car. This is where the desert starts to work on you. |
| 5-7 days (trek or loop) | 4-6 | The whole journey. A trek on foot, the two ergs, or the full crossing — the desert as the destination, no longer an excursion. |
The three planning mistakes we see every week
The express return from Marrakech in two days. Sixteen hours of driving for eight waking hours of desert: we refuse to sell it, others do not. The desert squeezed between two flights. Plan a buffer night in Marrakech or Ouarzazate after leaving the desert — the piste keeps no timetable to the hour. Underestimating the way back. The last day of any tour is a real driving day; plan nothing important that evening.
If you are still hesitating
Between one and two nights, take two: the price difference is small and the second night is the one where you actually sleep. Between a 4x4 tour and a trek, read our treks page — walking changes the nature of the trip. And if your dates are fixed but your route is open, describe the whole thing to us: the tailor-made service exists precisely for complicated calendars.
Frequently asked questions
Is a single day worth it?
Yes, on one condition: start from a desert gateway, not from a big city. From Foum Zguid, one day shows you Lake Iriqui and even the great dunes. From Marrakech, a 'desert day trip' is a commercial lie: eight hours of road for one hour of landscape.
And to see BOTH ergs, Chebbi and Chigaga?
Count six to seven days in a loop from Marrakech: Merzouga, the N12 through Alnif and Tazzarine, then Chigaga via Foum Zguid. It is the finest loop in the South, and it never passes the same spot twice. We build it as a tailor-made trip.
Is a full week in the desert too much?
Nobody has ever told us 'it was too long'. The opposite, every week. A week allows the trek on foot, the two ergs, or simply a rhythm where the nap is no longer a compromise but a plan.
