Not everyone has a night to give the desert. This trip condenses the essentials into one day: the Lake Iriqui crossing in the morning, the high Chigaga dunes at midday, and the return to Foum Zguid as the sun drops. It is the format for travellers passing through on the N12, families testing the desert before committing, and people who will be back.

Let's be honest, as always: a day shows you the desert, a night makes you live it. You will see the dunes, walk them, eat beneath them — but the campfire, the star field and the evening silence belong to the overnight version. Many of our day guests book the night for their next trip. We understand them completely.

Highlights

Itinerary

  1. 8:00 am

    Leave Foum Zguid

Quick tea, briefing, and due south. The lake is crossed in the cool morning, when low light still rakes the clay.

  2. 10:30 am

    Reach the dunes

The erg appears beyond the Moroccan Colorado. Ridge walking, sandboarding for those who want it, photographs for everyone.

  3. 1:00 pm

    Nomad lunch

Salads, tajine and tea served in the shade at the foot of the dunes, prepared by the camp crew.

  4. 3:00 pm

    One last climb, then north

A final crest for the panorama, then the eastern track home — you never drive the same route twice.

  5. 6:30 pm

    Foum Zguid at sundown

Back in the village with the sun low on Jbel Bani. Shower and dinner in town, or onward to your next stage.

Who this format is for

For N12 travellers overnighting in Foum Zguid between Tata and Zagora. For families who want to test the track before committing children to a night under canvas. For photographers who only want the midday light on the lake clay. And for anyone whose route leaves just one day — a day well used beats a desert missed.

Season and climate

Year-round except high summer: in July and August the format becomes a 6 am start returning before the worst heat, centred on Lake Iriqui rather than the dunes.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough to see the desert?

To see it, yes — and see it well: lake, Colorado, high dunes. To live it, no: the desert gives its best between sunset and sunrise. If you can free up a night, take the 2-day tour; the €40 difference is the best-spent money of the trip.

Can we start earlier for sunrise?

Yes, on request: a 5:30 am departure puts you on Lake Iriqui at first light, the finest hour of the sebkha. Same price — just say so when booking.

Is it feasible with young children?

Yes — it is our gentlest family format: no night in a tent, short stages, and home before evening tiredness. Child seats provided on request.
