How to get to Foum Zguid: the transport guide
By the Desert Foum Zguid team · Updated 11 August 2026
Foum Zguid is reached entirely on paved roads: allow 4.5 h from Marrakech via the Tizi n'Tichka pass and Taznakht, 2.5 h from Ouarzazate, 4 h from Agadir and 2 h from Zagora. Daily buses serve the village, and we arrange private transfers. Here is every route in detail — kilometres, road conditions, and the stops worth making.

From Marrakech (≈ 420 km, 4.5 – 5.5 h)
The classic route crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass (N9), branches before Ouarzazate towards Taznakht (N10), carpet country, then runs due south on the R111 to Foum Zguid. Recommended stops: the pass viewpoint, a tajine in Taznakht, and — with a 1 h detour — the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. A variant via Agdz and the Ouarzazate lake adds an hour and more kasbahs.
No car? Our 3-day trip includes pick-up at your riad — the road becomes the first stage of the journey, narrated by a Saharan guide. See all our tours departing from Marrakech.
From Ouarzazate (≈ 160 km, 2.5 h)
N10 to Taznakht then R111 due south. A wide, fast road through steppe and plateau country — watch for the Anti-Atlas viewpoints. This is the quickest approach if you fly into Ouarzazate. See our tours from Ouarzazate — including the 2-day round trip to Erg Chigaga, Morocco's fastest route to a great erg.
From Agadir (≈ 360 km, 4 h)
N10 via Taliouine — saffron capital, a perfect stop — then Taznakht and the R111. A beautiful Anti-Atlas crossing still unknown to the tour buses. This is the road of our guests on beach stays in Agadir or Taghazout who want to see the real desert.
From Zagora (≈ 130 km, 2 h)
The N12 westwards along the southern flank of Jbel Bani. Decent tarmac, rare traffic, an already Saharan mood — the route of motorhomes doing the southern loop, and the starting point of our tours from Zagora.

Private transfers and what comes next

Frequently asked questions
Is the Marrakech – Foum Zguid road difficult?
No: fully paved and in good condition. The only demanding stretch is the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), spectacular but well engineered; in January–February check the pass weather before setting out. After Taznakht the road is wide, straight and nearly empty.
Can I come in an ordinary rental car?
Yes, as far as Foum Zguid itself: everything is tarmac. Beyond the village a 4x4 becomes essential — park your car safely in the village (auberge car parks) and join a tour with us.
Is there fuel and an ATM on the way?
Fuel stations in Taznakht and Foum Zguid; an ATM in the village. Good Saharan habit: fill up in Taznakht and keep some cash — the village ATM can be temperamental on souk days.
