Most Erg Chegaga tours take the long way round through Zagora and M'hamid. Ours takes the direct road — Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Taznakht, Foum Zguid — and gains half a day of desert: you are in the dunes by noon on day 2, via the crossing of Lake Iriqui.
Three days, two nights: one at the foot of Jbel Bani in Foum Zguid, the other at a camp deep in Erg Chegaga. The return runs down the Draa valley and its kasbahs. Pick-up at your riad in Marrakech, private 4x4, with a guide from Foum Zguid — not a city driver.

- Tips
The road is part of the journey
Many tours sell the desert and endure the road. We do the opposite: the early-morning climb of the Tizi n'Tichka, the fortified granaries after the pass, lunch in Taznakht with a family we have known for years, the descent to Foum Zguid as the country shifts from mountain to hamada. Your guide narrates what you are crossing, in both directions. On day 3 the return through the Draa valley adds palm groves and ksour: you never drive the same road twice.
What this trip is not
No imposed stops at cooperatives where the guide earns a commission. No surprise carpet-factory visit. No camp shared with forty people and a sound system. If you want to buy a carpet in Taznakht or saffron in Taliouine, we will gladly take you and leave you to bargain in peace; otherwise, we drive on. The trip is yours.
Making the road hours easy
This trip has two real driving stages: four and a half hours on day one, six on the last day, broken by stops roughly every hour and a half. The 4x4 is air-conditioned, water is on board, and child seats are fitted on request. Anyone prone to motion sickness rides up front on the mountain sections; it is expected and nobody minds. First departure is 8 am: early, yes, but that is what gives you the pass in morning light and Ait Ben Haddou before the groups arrive.
Season and climate
Runs year-round; in July–August the camp night is swapped for an oasis night. The Tichka pass can see snow a few days in January–February — we adapt the timing, never the safety.
Frequently asked questions
Why via Foum Zguid rather than Zagora?
Shorter and more varied: the Marrakech – Foum Zguid road avoids 3 extra hours of tarmac via Agdz-Zagora, and the Foum Zguid – Chegaga track (2.5 h) crosses Lake Iriqui — the most beautiful stretch of the south. More time in the desert, less on the road.
Is the tour private or shared?
Private: the 4x4, the guide and the pace are yours. The displayed price is per person based on 2 travellers; it drops for 4 and 6 — ask for the exact rate on WhatsApp.
Can we add a day?
Yes — the 4-day version adds a full day in the erg (dune walk, Oum Laalag oasis). Same route, more contemplative.
Where do we sleep exactly?
Day 1 at a guesthouse in Foum Zguid (private room and bathroom). Day 2 at our Erg Chegaga camp in an equipped nomad tent — luxury option with private bathroom available.
Can we start from Agadir or Ouarzazate instead of Marrakech?
Yes. From Ouarzazate the trip saves two hours of road and the price drops; from Agadir the duration is similar, passing through Taliouine and its saffron country. We adjust the route and rate to your departure city — just say so in your enquiry.
Can the trip end somewhere other than Marrakech?
Yes, the trip ends where your journey continues: drop-off possible in Ouarzazate, Zagora or Agadir, with the rate adjusted for distance. Handy for carrying on to the coast or the Draa valley without backtracking.
