The best desert tours from Marrakech, from the real to the marketing
By the Desert Foum Zguid team · Updated 14 August 2026
From Marrakech, 'desert tour' covers four products that have almost nothing in common: an evening in a stone desert 45 minutes away, an exhausting return trip to small dunes, and two great ergs that deserve the journey. Transparency: we ourselves operate on one of the four — this comparison flags it and applies the same criteria to all.
Marrakech's four "deserts", compared coldly
| Destination | Honest duration | Real budget | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agafay (stone desert) | Evening or 24 h | €60-250 | A fine sunset 45 minutes from the city. Zero dunes: it is a mineral plateau with an Atlas view. Perfect if time is short, provided you know what you are buying. |
| Zagora (Erg Lihoudi) | 2 days (~14 h of it road) | €50-150 | The medina's entry-level product. Small dunes, collective camps, many minibuses. Honest if bought knowingly, disappointing if you expected the Sahara of the photos. |
| Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | 3 days minimum (~18 h of it road) | €150-600 | Morocco's highest dunes and an offer for every budget. Trade-off: the longest road and the busiest erg. The right choice without a 4x4, or to sleep in a solid building at the foot of the sand. |
| Erg Chigaga via Foum Zguid — our terrain | 3-4 days (the least tarmac of the two great ergs) | €440-600 | The great wild erg: 4x4 access across Lake Iriqui, no buildings, very few camps. Our 3-day and 4-day trips start at your riad, prices displayed. |
How to read a Marrakech offer in thirty seconds
- "Desert" with no erg named = Agafay or Zagora, statistically.
- "2-day Sahara" = Zagora. The real Sahara does not fit in 2 days from Marrakech; road arithmetic forbids it.
- A price without a list of inclusions = surcharges on board.
- "Guaranteed daily departure" = an assembled group, not private — fine if that is what you want, worth checking if you were told "private".
- The ultimate test: ask for the camp's name and GPS position. A serious operator answers within a minute.
Our recommendation by profile (competitors included)
You have one evening: Agafay, without complexes — the camps there do their sunset job well. You have two days and a small budget: Zagora in a group, eyes open. You have three days and no 4x4: Merzouga and a night in a camp on Erg Chebbi's quiet flank. You have three-four days and want the empty desert: that is our lane — Chigaga by the direct Foum Zguid route, and the full reasoning is in Erg Chigaga vs Erg Chebbi and how many days for the desert.
Frequently asked questions
Are the €60-100 tours sold in the medina scams?
No — they are different products, sold with ambiguous vocabulary. At that price you are buying a shared minibus to Zagora or Agafay, not the great erg. The scam begins when you are left believing that 'desert' means the dunes in the photos. Ask a single question: 'which erg, exactly?' — the answer (or its absence) tells you everything.
Is it better to book from home or on the spot in Marrakech?
From home for multi-day trips: good operators display their prices online and high-season places go early. On the spot only for stakes-free day outings (Agafay, Ouzoud). And never, anywhere, without a written confirmation detailing what is included.
Why does your own tour appear in this comparison?
Because leaving it out would be false modesty, and slipping it in unlabelled would be manipulation. It appears, flagged as ours, under the same criteria as the others — and the table also tells you when a competitor fits your case better (Merzouga without a 4x4, Agafay without time).
